“Improving reproductive efficiency of your alpaca herd”

Presenter

Jane Vaughan~ CriaGenesis Australia

PRESENTER:
Jane Vaughan has been working with alpacas and llamas since 1991. Jane graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in 1988, gained membership to the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the Ruminant Nutrition Chapter in 1998 and completed a Doctor of Philosophy in the control of alpaca ovarian function in 2002. Jane performs commercial embryo collection and transfer in alpacas throughout Australia and camels in the UAE. She also provides nutritional and parasitological advice to alpaca breeders in Australia.

Understanding the reproductive anatomy and physiology of your alpacas or llamas will enable you to take control of reproduction in your herd. Whether you are performing supervised yard-matings of only a few camelids, or paddock mating hundreds, it is essential to maximise conception rates so that females conceive quickly and efficiently, subfertile/infertile females are identified and treated/culled early, and unpacking (birthing) the following year is condensed and not stretched out over months.

“What is skirting, how to do it & why preparation is vitally important”.

Presenter

Emma Taylor ~ East Anglia Mill, UK.

Emma and Chris built East Anglia Alpaca Mill some 11 years ago having discovered that they were unable to process their soon to be first clip from their initial 11 alpacas. The Mill is totally dedicated to alpaca meaning we process only huacaya & suri fibre & we specialise in small batches with no minimum batch size. We have endeavoured to honour the ethos of the alpacas themselves in our processing methods.

In this presentation, as an alpaca owner and a professional mill owner, Emma will step through the process of fleece skirting and preparation for processing and showing, and explain why good skirting is so important.

“Getting to Neutral – Camelid Dynamics for Alpaca Handling”

Presenter

Marty Magee Bennett CameliDynamics USA

Marty Magee Bennett has devoted her professional and to a large extent her personal life to the well-being of llamas and alpacas and the education of camelid enthusiasts.

She have travelled over a million miles to five continents, at least twenty countries, taught in every state in the United States except Rhode Island, has worked with veterinary colleges around the world taught over 630 clinics, was an assistant cook on a research expedition in Patagonia to collect information on guanaco births. Still camelids and their people continue to amaze and delight her every single day.

Newtons 3rd Law: When an object A exerts a force on object B, object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.
Marty’s Law of Camelidynamics: Exert force on a camelid and they react badly by jumping around or pulling back. Learn how to get to neutral and then to use signals to teach your camelid to either; stand still or move— when you want them to! What else is there? In this presentation, we will get a fascinating insight to the source and fundamentals of Camelidynamics, or how to get to that neutral position for ultimate benefit for alpaca and handler.

“Practical Alpaca Nutrition.”

Presenter

Jane Vaughan ~ CriaGenesis, Australia

Different classes of livestock have different physiological needs and it is useful to have some rules-of-thumb to assist feeding your herd. You must first satisfy the water, energy, protein and fibre needs or your herd, before worrying about vitamin and mineral supplementation. Nevertheless, alpacas and llamas are susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. Growing animals (< 3 years old) and females due to give birth in winter require supplementation with vitamin D in autumn, winter and spring. Alpacas are often farmed on selenium-deficient soils, but not all selenium supplements are suitable for use in camelids and will be discussed.

Every individual has a different idea as to what constitutes herd improvement and how quickly they seek to achieve that improvement.

Firstly though we need to understand what the objective is and to do this we must recognise what the ultimate goal is.  Breeders must be aware of current trends and breeding practices, and what the current market requires.
