Mourne Alpacas Alpaca Academy – Training Schedule 2022

Here at Mourne Alpacas Academy™ we are delighted to present the first ever certified

“Alpacas in Therapy Settings – Training for Inclusive Practice”

Having established the Alpacas in Therapeutic Settings Facebook page during lockdown, our herd owner and training presenter Dr Michelle Dunniece has, after research and study, put pen to paper and designed a beginner course for anyone working with alpacas in public-facing settings, or therapeutic settings. This one day beginner training session to focus on the elements of inclusive practice, disability awareness training and application, designing your activities and interactions based on the social model of disability, and also consider your own approach to communication and inclusivity. We will consider the suitability of the alpaca for therapeutic settings, and why, how, when and if you would be working with alpacas in these scenarios. So, for trekking operators, alpaca experience operators, alpaca therapy providers, or simply for those interested in improving their skills in working interactively in the community and adding true inclusivity to your activities, this course is a must!

PRESENTER: Dr Michelle Dunniece blends being the owner of one of the largest herds on the island of Ireland for nearly two decades with working in the special needs sector for more than three decades, as a researcher, assistive systems designer, CEO of a national charity for people with disabilities,  and advocate for inclusive rights for people with different abilities. Having focused throughout her professional life on empowerment, inclusion and equality for people who are marginalised in our society, and researching and designing interfaces and assistive technology to bring equality and inclusivity to their workplace, social setting and home life, Michelle has long recognised and researched the benefits that alpaca and animal therapies in general can bring to people who society can sometimes leave on the margins.
